Historic Site Renovation

Renovate the compromised site around the 1714 plantation home to make appropriate interventions on a remnant of an 18th century plantation in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Our Solution

We researched and documented the landscape history to determine the best landscape treatment for Melwood Park. We obtained approvals from Maryland Historic Trust and Prince George’s County. We integrated native plants with high wildlife value to augment hedgerow borders to buffer from encroaching suburban development and to reduce maintenance needs for the foundation.

This remnant landscape maintained its orientation and topography over centuries as it was reduced from 1,050 acres to just 7 acres. Our job was to maintain the integrity of what was left, and to allow others to see what it once had been…yes, George Washington really did eat here on a regular basis!
